Wandering Among the Wildflowers

Hello Wildflower Families,

I hope that you had a wonderful winter break and it has been so nice to see everyone back at school. It has also been nice to see snow come to Nelson and with it I want to remind everyone that students should come to school with appropriate winter clothing.

The new term has started off gangbusters with our classes diving into a variety of new learning. Our seedlings have begun to create stop motion videos, while in Kirsten’s and Tanya’s classes have begun to explore the rock cycle. Emily’s class is exploring rocks in a different manner by digging deep into archeology. Hoping on the theme of change Heather’s class is exploring the scientific reasons why and how things change. In the middle school classes the annual tradition of passions has begun. Students are picking a focus area and diving deep into an area of interest.

While the winter weather has finally come to Nelson, it has been in the mountains for a while and ski season is upon us. Every year the PAC organizes ski lessons for Wildflower students. I want to say a big thank you to all of PAC for supporting this but also highlight the efforts of Matt and Colleen who have done the bulk of the organization.

Finally, a couple of reminders, please make sure to check the lost and found for any misplaced clothing. If you write your child’s name on the tag of their clothes we can get it back to them faster. Registration is now open for next year, and while we are very close to full there are still a few spots remaining. If you know someone interested in our school, please have them contact me or the main office.

Why Parenting Scripts Fail (and What Actually Works): The research suggests there are more effective ways to tame tantrums

It seems that every parenting expert on the internet has a “script” for what to say when your child is having a tantrum or meltdown. Some parenting influencers even imply that if you say exactly the right words at the right time, your child’s tantrum will will magically be “tamed.”

One of the most popular parenting accounts Big Little Feelings suggests that parents use scripts like this: “You’re frustrated because I won’t let you eat the dog food. It’s okay to feel frustrated.” [Also, try saying this with a straight face— I’ll bet you can’t!] These influencers then go on to claim that using scripts like this is: “the first and most critical step toward decreasing the intensity and duration of tantrums.”

All the best
