Wandering Among the Wildflowers

Assembly

Hello Wildflower Families,

The home stretch is upon us. We are one week from June and three weeks from the end of the school year. As I was walking around the school yesterday I was reflecting on all the things that have gone on this year and I was amazed by how much we were able to jam pack into it. There is still more coming though and our classes are extremely busy with field trips, class plays, and various other projects.

Next week Barb’s class is going camping, then the following week Kirsten’s class is going to Pines and, Harry and Krista’s class are going to Fort Steele. We also have class plays happening in several of our classes, and right now Heather’s class is busy creating their costumes for their play. Emma’s class is similarly preparing for their play and if you walk through the halls you may hear singing along to “The Lions Sleep Tonight”.

Yesterday we had our end of the year BBQ, and while some may claim the end of the year is still awhile away, the days are so busy this was the only time that we could fit it in. A huge thanks to the PAC and all the parents who pitched in to make it a success. An especially huge thanks to Jenna who took on the coordinating role again this year. The proceeds from the event will go to help with our efforts to get grass growing back on our field. Speaking of which, see below for how you can help us transform the field.

Staffing News

This time of the year in the school system is filled with change and excitement. Our grade 1s are moving into their new families and our grades 6s are joining the middle school. We also have some changes happening in our staffing. Over the past two months we have had a practicum student completing their final practicum for their educational assistant diploma. Tia has completed her practicum and has now been hired by the school district. We are thrilled that this has allowed her to rejoin and become part of the Wildflower family for the rest of the year.

Not all change is easy to celebrate. While we are thrilled for her, Krista will not be returning next year. This year, she achieved the impressive milestone of completing her Master’s in Counselling, and the district has offered her a full-time counselling position, something she has been working toward for a long time. Although it’s bittersweet to see her leave Wildflower, we are incredibly proud of her. Krista has been a cornerstone of our school community for over ten years, and a steady, caring presence for so many of our students. She has dedicated her time and energy to both the elementary and middle school programs, making a lasting impact in each. She will be greatly missed, and we wish her all the very best as she transitions into this new role.

We should know more about who will be taking over the middle school classroom in the coming weeks and will let you know as soon as we know.

Grade 6 Leadership Project – Tiny Lights Film Installation

For the past two years we have received a grant from VIDEA to run a grade 6 leadership program. This has been a great chance for our grade 6s to connect and create compelling art projects. If you are going to Tiny Lights swing by the school house and check out the film that they have created. If you can’t make it we are looking into ways that we can share the video with others.

What We Get Wrong About Teaching Kids to Apologize and Forgive

As an expert on the topic of interpersonal forgiveness, it is difficult for me to hear of situations when teachers and parents demand children to apologize and forgive immediately after an offense. Those are often viewed as quick behavioral fixes in situations of conflict or when one individual has been hurt by another. This process often includes instructions such as: “Say I’m sorry, accept the apology, and move on.”

For parents and educators, this solution may feel easy and effective, as it appears to involve restoring social harmony quickly while also teaching children responsibility and compassion. But, although we may believe that we are encouraging moral behavior and helping students feel better, we are actually teaching them that forgiveness and apologies result by simply saying the words without understanding the meaning and process behind these moral actions, according to May Yuan and her colleagues in a 2021 article.

All the best
